About University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH)


University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) as a tertiary health facility came into being in 1973 following the enactment of an edict (number 12). As the sixth of the 1st generation Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria, it was established to complement her sister institution, University of Benin, and to provide secondary and tertiary care to the then Midwestern Region (now Edo and Delta State) and its environs. 

It also provides necessary facilities for training of high and middle level manpower for the health industry and spearheads research opportunities for lecturers in the University and other interested persons with local morbidity burden as research question(s). 

Through the Community Health Centres in Ogbona and Udo, and the General Practice Clinic that came on stream later, she equally provides some avenues for primary health care to the immediate communities. 

At inception its goals were encapsulated in her motto for Healing, Research and Training. Initially commissioned as a 300 bedded hospital in 1973, UBTH which is located on the Benin – Lagos Expressway, has expanded her facilities tremendously over the years such that she now has facilities for over 900 in-patients.

To provide effective and efficient training of health professionals, quality research and equitable service delivery with empathy towards our clients.

UBTH BRIEF HISTORY

The journey to the establishment of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH began early in 1969 when the idea was first conceived by the then Military Governor of the defunct Midwest State, Colonel S.O Ogbemudia after private visits to the Island Maternity Hospital and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. ‘
Encouraged by what he saw on ground during the visit, Colonel Ogbemudia in mid—1960 set up an advisory committee headed by Professor H. Oritsejolomi Thomas with such renowned Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr. T. Bello Osagie and Prof. A.E Boyo the then Head of Department, College of Medicine, University of Lagos as members of the advisory Committee for the Midwest Medical Centre.
Certainly, the dream of a Teaching Hospital for the then Midwest state would have remained a mirage where it note for contribution, commitment and determination of few prominent Nigerians who not only sacrificed their time but also brought to bear, their expertise and professionalism to make the project a reality.
These Nigerian included Mr. O.l. Afe, the acting secretary to the Midwest Military Government under Col. Ogbemudia; Mr. W.J. Anukpe, then Permanent Secretary. Ministry of Finance and Economic Development; Prof. H. Oritsejolomi , Thomas and Prof. T. Bello Osagie who later became, Board Chairman. Prof. T. Bello Osagie who later became a Board Chairman of the Hospital was Spectacular and outstanding in the way he concluded the affairs of the hospital. 

CLINICAL SERVICE AT UBTH

UBTH, in the forty five years of its existence can boast of numerous state of the art equipment on ground. These includes; a functioning Renal Dialysis centre that was recently admitted into the highly competitive Sister Renal centre Programme by the international Society of Nephrology in the united kingdom; CT Scanning Centre; Endoscopy for special investigation, Oxygen plant that supplies the Hospital with all that is needed amongst others, in 2002 a set of quintuplets were successfully delivered in the Hospital and all survived.
In year, 2007the Hospital recorded a big feat with the success of its lnvitro Fertilization HRRP/IVF Unit, the second government owned hospital in Nigeria and in black Africa[South of the Sahara] to effect an IVF aka ‘Test Tube Baby’ to families with fertility problems. According to Prof Austine Orhue, the Director of project, we have achieved good pregnancy rate is at par with other IVF Centres in Nigeria, Europe and America
In fourty five years of its existence, UBTH has established and maintained so many schools, these are: UBTH School of Nursing, which has also existed and it’s known to have produced competent Nurses. There is also the school of Midwifery, which recently received an award from Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria for academic excellence.
Others include, the School of Post Basic Nursing Studies, Centre for Training Community Health Officers in Ekpoma and recently, UBTH Group of Schools, School of Health Information Technology, School of information Management to mention a few.
The UBTH as at date, laid the ground work to break into new areas of sub-specialties as contained in the UBTH vision 2010. The bone Marrow Transplantation, intensive new-born care, recently knee Cap replacement, Laboratory, are the works to transform the hospital to a first class Teaching Hospital, providing quality health care delivery.
As one of the Old Generation Teaching Hospital in the Country, The UBTH has served as a Tertiary Federal Hospital and Centre of Excellence over years, it has indeed served as the last port of call for expert management of most disesed conditions in this part of the country serving in this capacity, its catchment’s area covering Edo, Delta and the neighboring Ondo, Anambra, Kogi and Other states.
Since inception, the Hospital has been headed by five provost/ Chief Medical Directors, the first being Prof. J. A Ayanru, [1978-1981], Prof. N.O. Osamo [1981-1984], Prof. J.A. Omene, [1984—1985], Prof. J. C. Ebie, a renowned and Prof. Eugene Okpere, an Obstetrician-Gynaecologist, [2004 -2008], Prof. M. O. Ibadin, [2009-till date. The giant strides recorded by the present Chief Medical Director Prof. M.O Ibadin as evidence by structures and facilities presently on ground earned him a second tenure.

UBTH VISION 2020

The Hospital’s VISION of aiming to be a major key player in health care delivery, research and training in Nigeria and Africa at large and its mission, to provide efficient training of health professionals, quality research and equitable service delivery with empathy towards our clients is blessed with virtually all sub specialties. There is Accident and Emergency Centre, the most integrated in the Country. The center has the state of the art complete Burns Unit. This Centre played a major role in the care of Victims of the Jesse fire disaster of 1998 and Ovirri Court fire outbreak in 2000.
In 2007, UBTH was adjudged the best in Service Delivery amongst all Federal Government Offices and Departments. Before the establishment of SERVICOM, the UBTH has in place the patient’s right protection committee, designed to overhaul the Hospital’s rules and regulations and pave the way for Client-friend, UBTH Where a patient comes in pay deposit and drugs and consumable are provided. They could pay their bill on discharge. This has in no small measure helped to reduced stress on clients.
In terms of physical development, if not all the abandoned projects that adorn the premises for most 30 years have been completed, these include the gigantic Dental, Ophthalmic and Oncology complexes, integrated Consultant Clinic, Institutionalized Private Practice Building, School of Health Technology structure and a Transit Home for patients relations and friends.
For a hospital that started as a modest Medical Centre in 1971 its transformation into a course of excellence in 2008 in terms of service, Teaching and research is monumental and worth celebrating
